Roulette Top Ten Tips

Roulette may be a game of pure luck, but there are still a few things to keep in mind that will help make your gambling experience more enjoyable:

  1. If the option is available, always go for the French Wheel. You'll lower the house advantage from 5.26% to 2.70%!
  2. If you are playing with an American Wheel, never place a line-five bet. This is the only bet that has worse odds than all the others!
  3. Know your odds. The riskier the bet, the better the payoffs. See our Rules section for more information. And keep in mind that the payoff odds are always slightly lower than your actual odds of winning. For example, the payoff for a straight bet is 35:1, while your odds of winning are 1 out of 38.
  4. Also know the rules. Betting is done by placing chips inside spaces or over lines or intersections of lines on the game layout. Make sure you're making the right bets!
  5. Don't be fooled by roulette betting strategies like Martingale and D'Alembert. Despite their flashy appellations, these strategies are fundamentally flawed, and you'd do best to leave them for the birds.
  6. Clever roulette players sometimes try their hand at a strategy of betting based on perceived mechanical defects in the roulette wheel. While this may be an effective technique where applicable, don't put too much faith in such strategies. Casinos often rebalance their roulette wheels regularly to keep players from taking advantage of the house.
  7. Remember that each round of roulette is discrete - i.e. past results have no bearing on future outcomes.
  8. That said, be wary of getting carried away on a winning streak. Overconfidence can quickly lead to empty pockets.
  9. Gambling should be fun! Bet on numbers that are meaningful to you, like birthdays, anniversaries, jersey numbers, etc. That's guaranteed to keep the game exciting.
  10. Whatever happens, do keep in mind that roulette is after all a game of chance. Don't blame yourself for losing, or praise yourself (too much) for winning. It's all in the luck of the spin....
