The First Roulette Wheel

The credit for creating the first roulette wheel can be attributed to the French mathematician Blaise Pascal who wanted to create a device that would be in a state of continuous motion.  After Pascal created this large spinning wheel, one of his friends saw the potential to devise a gambling game.  This game, which eventually came to be known as Roulette, gained popularity in France during the 1700s and it soon spread to other parts of Europe.  The layout of European Roulette as well as the rules by which this game is played have remained largely unchanged until today.

The Legend Behind the Roulette Game

There is an interesting story about the origins of the game.  Francois Blanc, who was the founder of the first casino at Monte Carlo, is believed to have created this game.  Legend has it that Blanc sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the secrets of the game.  This legend is further born out by the fact that all the numbers on the roulette wheel add up to 666 which is the number of the devil.  While there is no solid fact to substantiate this legend, it is true that Blanc was responsible for adding the 0 slot on the wheel thereby increasing the odds in favor of the house.

American Roulette History

It was in the year 1800 that the game traversed the Atlantic ocean to America.  Like their European counterparts, the Americans also enjoyed the game with its easy rules and high payouts.  American casino owners took Blanc’s idea of adding a 0 slot to the wheel one step further.  They added a 00 slot increasing the house odds even more.  Soon the game increased in popularity and had a certain aura of glamour associated with it – which is there even today.
